Steel City – Landscape 48
Matija Debeljuh, 2014
In a new work entitled Steel City (memories of childhood) artist draws interest to the study of the industrial landscape, of, as he is called, "Steel City". In his memory the chimneys and pillars of smoke define the vertical view of the city, evoking images of memories and becominng a reminder of the urban transformation and fate of many post-industrial cities. The scenes set by the artist not only positioned questions of memory, but also a set of relationships - of future industrial production, the identity of cities, collective memory and social and political reality. Images of industrial architecture which we have seen in the work of Matija Debeljuh, although representing the city of Zenica, could be recognized as spaces that define our social and cultural landscape, and indicate the author's interest that directs our attention to refer to contextual framework in which the different social and economic relations, the current situation and the current position is reflecting; not only in Croatia but in the region and the global context.
